Namibia let slip a great advantage to crash to a 33-run defeat against South Western Districts in their three-day Cricket South Africa Challenge match at the Wanderers field on Saturday.
Namibia held a 157-run lead on the first innings, but SWD staged a great comeback, scoring 339 in their second innings and then dismissing Namibia for 149 to claim a remarkable victory.
SWD’s second innings got off to a solid start as Stefan Grobler (44) and Burton de Wet (63) put on 90 runs for the second wicket to take the score to 120/2.
Further sizeable contributions from Rudi Hillerman (45), Pieter Stuurman (35), Willie Hantam (45) and Nathan Murray (31) saw them reaching a total of 339 all out, to set Namibia a winning target of 183 runs.
Pieter Rossouw (3/35 off 12 overs) and Louis Klazinga (2/57 off 11 overs) were Namibia’s best bowlers.
Namibia were soon in trouble when Raymond van Schoor (15) and Ewald Steenkamp (6) were dismissed within a minute of each other with the score on 23.
Craig Williams and Gerrie Snyman rebuilt the innings with a 57 run partnership but when Williams was out for 29, the slide started as Namibia lost their next seven wickets for only 69 runs.
Gerhard Rudolph was out for 3, Sarel Burger for 7, and Christi Viljoen for 6, before the big-hitting Gerrie Snyman was dismissed for a top score of 55, which came off 40 balls and included two fours and three sixes.
With the score at 132/7 and Namibia still needing 50 runs for victory, the advantage had swung to SWD and they soon dismissed Namibia’s tail. Louis Klazinga was out for 5, Wian van Vuuren for 10 and Pieter Rossouw for 2 as Namibia crashed to 149 all out.
On the opening day on Thursday, Namibia had dismissed SWD for 110 in their first innings, with Louis Klazinga taking 4/31 off 17 overs and Sarel Burger 3/24 off 13 overs.
Namibia declared their first innings at 267/8 with Raymond van Schoor scoring 79 runs, Craig Williams 45, Gerrie Snyman and Gerhard Rudolph 37 each and Ewald Steenkamp 36 runs.
