The Welwitschias picked up their first point in their Vodacom Cup campaign following their narrow 29-27 defeat to defending champions Griquas on Saturday. The Welwitschias collected a point for losing by less than seven points, which sees them moving off the foot of the table for the first time this season.
The wooden spoonists position has now been taken by the Falcons, who still have to open their account after losing their opening three matches. They have a points deficit of 107 compared to Namibia’s deficit of 62 points.
The two teams are the only ones without a win in the North Section of the Vodacom Cup competition so far this season. Interestingly enough, the Falcons are coached by former Namibian coach John Williams, who will return to his old hunting ground when the two sides meet in Windhoek on Friday night.
After the first three rounds of the competition the Blue Bulls are the only remaining unbeaten team in the North Section, and lead the log with 13 points.
The Platinum Leopards, who have won two and lost one match are second on 12 points, while the Griquas are third on 11 points.
The Pumas and the Golden Lions are each on 10 points, followed by the Griffons on 6, the Welwitschias on 1 and the Falcons on zero points.
The Sharks XV lead the South Section of the competition on 10 points after winning two and losing one of their opening three matches.
They are followed by Free State who are also on 10 points, the Boland Kavaliers (9) and the Pampas XV, Western Province and Eastern Province who are all on 8 points each. Border (2) and South Western Districts (1) bring up the rear.
The complete results of Round 3 over the weekend are as follows:
Pampas XV 73 Border 14
Boland Kavaliers 25 SWD 24
Sharks XV 26 Free State 17
Eastern Province 23 Western Province 28
Golden Lions 22 Blue Bulls 27
